Justifying War Through History: Memory Politics and the Russian Invasion of Ukraine
Russia's war against Ukraine has extensively been framed and justified by preferences to historical narratives. Most prominently, Russian President Putin seeks to undermine Ukraine's right to exist as an independent country with its own national identity. Similarly, he has depicted the invasion of Ukraine with continuous references to the memories of the Soviet Union's Great Patriotic War against Nazi Germany. This panel will discuss the role of memory politics and particular historical narratives in the current conflict in Ukraine.
